  • Bold wallpaper, creative tiles, and mixed metals can help elevate a bathroom.
  • Glass panels for the shower and towel warmers are elegant touches that can make a big difference.

Designing a home can feel overwhelming, especially for those who don't spend their free time scouring Pinterest or watching HGTV shows for inspiration.

Although the living room and kitchen often take center stage when talking about renovations, bathrooms are communal spaces that shouldn't be overlooked.

The good news is that it's typically unnecessary to budget for a full overhaul, as there are simple yet impactful ways to add luxurious touches to a bathroom.

Still, knowing where to start can be the hardest part. That's why Business Insider asked New York-based interior designer Alvin Wayne and Portland-based interior designer Hannah Lichtenthaler of Allison Smith Design to share ways to transform any bathroom into a luxurious space.

Here's what the experts had to say.

Add some bold elements to the room.

Instantly bring your bathroom to life by adding eye-catching and elegant elements to the space.

"I love incorporating a statement element into a bathroom, such as a bold wallpaper or a unique light fixture," Lichtenthaler said. "These simple, budget-friendly additions instantly add character and elevate the overall design of the space."

Wayne also suggested using wallpaper that looks like natural stone or marble as an alternative to laying the actual material over the wall.

"Wallpaper can transform any space, especially a bathroom, to feel more luxurious," he said.

Ditch the shower curtain and opt for glass panels instead.

Small details can make a big difference when upgrading a space. For example, Wayne suggested replacing a shower curtain with something more substantial, like a glass panel.

"This instantly upgrades the look and feel of any bathroom, and it does not cost as much as you would think," he said.

Wayne added that these can usually be found at Home Depot, Wayfair, or a local glass company.

Get creative with tiles.

Tile design is an easy way to elevate the ambiance in a bathroom.

To create a dynamic and luxurious ambiance in the bathroom, consider changing up the tiles throughout the space — from the walls to the flooring.

"Pairing a large-scale floor pattern with smaller tiles in the shower can create visual interest," says Lichtenthaler. "Incorporating unique materials is an excellent way to elevate the overall look of your bathroom."

A towel warmer can make any bathroom feel like a spa.

If you want your space to feel luxurious, consider products that can enhance the bathroom experience, ambiance, and visuals.

Wayne told BI that a towel warmer can make any bathroom feel like a spa or a luxurious hotel. Depending on how much room you have, he recommended using either a towel-warming bag or a standing towel warmer.

Consider incorporating mixed-metal finishes.

Mixing metals can add an unpredictable touch to the bathroom.

The hardware in your bathroom can instantly boost the space's aesthetic. Lichtenthaler recommended mixing metals, as matching hardware can be predictable.

She told BI that brass can add warmth to the room, and black is great for creating a sleek, sophisticated contrast. She recommended incorporating these touches in items like faucets or knobs.

For a more cohesive look throughout, Wayne suggests chrome, polished nickel, or stainless-steel finishes.

Remember, less is often more in a bathroom.

Don't keep too many things on the counter.

A minimalist mindset can deliver a chic look and prevent your bathroom from looking cluttered.

"Keeping your countertops clear with just a few accessories, such as a plant, vase, or candle, can instantly elevate your space and give it a more luxurious feel," Lichtenthaler said.
