NYC Expected To Share More Details On NYE Celebration In Times Square

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New York City is set to announce the party is back on in Times Square to watch the iconic ball drop on New Year’s Eve.

The massive in-person celebration will return this year after a pandemic pause.

A formal announcement is expected later Tuesday, as the city and its partners figure out the last minute details and rules.

“This has been a heroic city fighting through COVID. We’re turning the corner, we’ve got a lot to celebrate,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday. “So it’s going to be a big moment in Times Square.”

Last year, there were the usual pyrotechnics and confetti as the ball dropped, but only a select few people were allowed to attend.

“We expect a large, wonderful celebration. We’re going to have some clear, smart rules to keep everyone safe,” de Blasio said.

The rules are still being ironed out, but a source close to the event told CBS2 the public will be allowed to gather as long as they are fully vaccinated or have proof of a negative COVID test.

Many New Yorkers speculate masks will be needed too, along with other traditional necessities.

“There’s no place to go to the bathroom. So be prepared, bring your mask and your diaper,” one person said.

From locals to tourists, many are eager for the fun.

“It definitely goes to show that people are working hard to get things back to normal,” said one woman.

“It felt like the old days again, so I think it’s about time,” another added.

The Naked Cowboy said he could never miss the comeback.

“I’m excited about that. I’ve been here every single day since the pandemic started,” he told CBS2.

Last year, only select essential workers and special guests were allowed to watch the ball drop in person from socially distanced pen. It’s still unclear how many will be allowed this year.
